What is a “Mommy Makeover”?

Unlike some of the other procedures that describe one particular surgery, a mommy makeover refers to a collection of procedures that are designed to offset some of the changes a woman experiences through pregnancy. Typically pregnancy has stretched out the fascia of the body wall in the tummy, it may have caused stretch marks, and often caused either breast sag or loss of volume in the breast.

Therefore a mommy makeover usually includes some of the following: Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, Tummy Tuck, and/or Liposuction. I tend to think that while each procedure adds benefit, together they are synergistic – the whole ends up greater than the sum of the parts.

Do many Moms really go do this?

LOTS.

How can I get rid of stretch marks?

There is unfortunately no known cure for stretch marks (or cellulite). But usually the stretch marks are on the bottom of the abdomen, and a tummy tuck removes this skin. Stretch marks higher up will still be there but they will be moved lower. And they will be stretched tight, usually making them less visible.

If I get Breast Implants, won’t I look ridiculous? I don’t want to look too big.

That’s why they make smaller implants. There are LOTS of women with implants-only a smaller percentage look overdone, but some people think that they represent the entire population of women with breast implants. In reality, there is a much larger group of women with implants, most of whom don’t look overdone and just look good.

If I get a Breast Lift, what stops it from sagging again?

Great question. Gravity and time still will occur. But I think the biggest variables that cause sagging breasts (besides genetics and luck) are: massive weight loss, pregnancy, monthly menstrual cycles (which have some expansion/contraction element) and then lastly gravity and time. So if a woman is not going to have anymore pregancies, and is not going to lose a lot of weight, a Breast Lift (mastopexy) ought to reposition the breasts, which then will age with the woman reasonably well.

Should I wait until I am done having kids?

This is a gray area (not clear cut). Personally I would wait until you are done having kids before getting a tummy tuck. I routinely perform Breast Augmentation and Liposuction on women who are going to have more kids. Breast Lift we can discuss.

Will I look exactly like I did when I was twenty?

Of course not. But if you are, say, thirty-five, we can make you a much better version of thirty-five. Perky breasts and flatter tummies usually make my patients very happy. You can use clothes to show off your figure instead of hiding it.

Can I do other procedures?

Certainly it is possible. For example, it is not uncommon to do breast implants and rhinoplasty together, for whatever reason. But I do want to draw the line at some point at what constitutes too much surgery. This is stuff we will decide together when we see you.
